Presentations next week

As on Tuesday 3rd you will be presenting, send me an email if you have any questions.

Some important points to remember:
  • You can use notes but you should only glance at them from time to time.
  •  Students who read their presentations can be marked normally but their mark should be 3.5
  •  The same criteria in the case of slide shows full of text. A slide show should contain summarised information not long pieces of text. Ideally, each slide should contain no more than 3 or 4 words.
  • Remember, this activity accounts for a significant part of the final mark so try your best.
It's a 3-minute presentation so don't panic. Organise your ideas, practice and you'll be fine!
 Good luck!

What life would be like with out it.

Your post must have 200 words minimum and also, include a picture of your favourite piece of technology.
And as usual, don't forget to comment on at least 3 of your classmates’ blogs.

Today

Dear Class,

How are you?
You don't have to attend the English class this afternoon but you do have to continue writing in your blogs. The fact that we don't meet doesn't mean you don't write in your blogs. Also, next class we can set the day and time to recuperate.
Remember you have 48 hours to finish with both, your post and your three posts in your classmates' blogs.
Best,
Belén

Tate Modern and Contemporary Art Museum

I'll never forget this museum, if you're ever in London please go!

Here you can find an Art Terms glossary, which could help you... And remember the vocabulary from last Tuesday? The word we can use for painterly in Spanish are pictórico or pictoricista.

Best,

Belén

Post 3

Dear Class,

Today you have two options:
A. Write about a career-related website that you enjoy visiting.

You should:
- provide a link
- describe the website (sections, features, etc)
- say how often you visit the site
- explain why you like the site

B. Write about a person/expert on your field that you admire.

Say:
-Who she/he is (Short biography)
-What she/he has done (examples of their work)
-Why you like her/him
-Include his/her image

Don't forget to add comments to at least 3 of your classmates’ blogs
Word Count: 180 - 200

As it's so difficult for me to choose one single person in my field I admire, I'd write about a career-related website. One of my favourite websites, if you ever feel like checking it out, is www.democracynow.org Although is not connected with translating nor teaching, I appreciate the effort of this independent media and I can also practice English by reading and listening to it.

Good luck!

First Themed Post

Dear Class,
Today you'll choose the topic to write in your blog. If you can't think of any, use this link as reference:

Good luck!
And read the tips about writing in my previous post.

Best,

More on writing

Many people have problems writing articles because they have trouble getting their thoughts organized. Ultimately, they end up going from one random idea to another with no real direction, thus resulting in the article coming off as a jumble of ideas and not at all coherent. In this article, we're going to discuss the easiest way to get through the writing of an article on any topic; the use of bullet points. We'll explain what a bullet point is, how to use it and finish with examples. Hopefully, after reading this article, you'll know how to use bullet points to effectively write all of your articles.
A bullet point is a specific idea to be discussed. For example, in writing an article about identifying home business scams, the bullet points may be as follows:
1. What a scam is.
2. How to identify a scam.
3. What to do if you suspect you've been scammed.
These are three bullet points that you could use to write your article on identifying home business scams. Each bullet point would be a specific paragraph or section of your article. A well written article only needs to have about three or four paragraphs in addition to your introduction. So three or four bullet points should be more than sufficient to get your point across.
So, how do you go about using bullet points? Well, bullet points should be used in your introduction, just as I did in this article. If you go back to my introductory paragraph, you should be able to easily spot the bullet points. If not, here they are below.
1. What a bullet point is.
2. How to use it.
3. Finish with examples.
By doing this,. I have a clear path for my article to follow so that it flows smoothly.
Finally, we reach the third bullet point in this article, the examples. Okay, here is an example of an introductory paragraph on buying designer shoes. Mind you, I really don't know anything about designer shoes. I'm using this point to illustrate that even for a topic you know nothing about, you can still organize your thoughts in a way that makes researching the topic very easy.
Here is our paragraph.
Many people are into designer shoes because they want to have the latest in fashion. However, for those of you who aren't quite sure how to go about getting designer shoes, this article should give you a head start. We'll discuss what designer shoes are, where to find them, how to know if you're paying too much and finally what some of the top designer shoes are.
Okay, what are our bullet points?
1. What designer shoes are.
2. Where to find them.
3. How to know if you're paying too much.
4. What the top designer shoes are.
There you have it. Those are enough bullet points to fill up four paragraphs of an article.
By using bullet points in your articles, it makes the art of article writing a whole lot easier.

To YOUR Success,
Steven Wagenheim
